I had the pleasant surprise of not having to work this weekend so here is what we did to celebrate. First we walked down to Market Street, jumped on the 255 bus and rode it to Westlake Center along with a bunch of Cougar and Husky types. It seems both WSU and UW had football games in Seattle today and there was much witty bus banter between the two sides. We got off before it escalated to violence and happily, swine flu no longer seemed to be in evidence on the Cougar side.
We sauntered down Pine street toward the Market in brilliant sunshine and with a happy crowd except for the Jesus people at 2nd and Pine who told us we were all going to hell. We paid them no mind and continued our journey to 1st Avenue where we reached our objective, Pan Africa Market. Ironically, the place turned out to be a close approximation of my idea of heaven, with a large African man in an apron standing in for the deity.
It was a real restaurant, unlike the West African place we tried in Columbia City. The staff was friendly and we shared a serving of Veggie Groundnut with a side of injera (the spongy bread served in Ethiopian restaurants). It was SO VERY good. With a healthy tip our bill came to only $15 and it was definitely the best 15 bucks I've spent in a very long time.
We then continued on to Pike Place Market, bought a few odds and ends (including ice cream cones at the Shy Giant), hunted unsuccessfully for an acceptable lettuce spinner at La Sur la Table and Macy's, bought some candy at See's(!), and headed home.
Quite a satisfying outing, especially for those of us who don't get out much. I think I've found a new favorite restaurant - Tropea is great but this place is on a different level of reality.
